چکیده

Among the different experimental agents that act upon the endochondral growth of laboratory animals. crude papain seems to be one of the most powerful (Hulth 1958). Papain acts rapidly on the cartilage and, when injected repeatedly, causes premature ossification of the epiphysial lines. Other factors that retard the longitudinal growth are endocrine disorders, such as those caused by hypophysectomy or thyroidectomy, and administration of cortisone. Younganimals fed on diets that are generallyor specificallydeficient also show retarded growth.

The Removal of Cartilage Matrix, in Vivo, by Papain

The intravenous injection of crystalline papain into young rabbits results in depletion of cartilage matrix throughout the body, with loss of rigidity and collapse of the ears, provided the enzyme is inactivated by oxidation or sulfhydryl blocking agents prior to administration. Cysteine-activated crystalline papain, when injected intravenously, produces little or no change in cartilage. The ch...

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on Microbial Decontamination, Crude Nutrient Content, and Mineral Nutrient Composition of Laboratory Animal Diets

Laboratory animal models are an important part of test design. Certain conditions such as microbial contamination in diets of these models could affect the results of experiments. One of the most important routes that predispose to contamination is generated through feeding of laboratory animals. This study aimed to show the effect of gamma irradiation in reducing bacteria concentrations,...

Reversible Collapse of Rabbit Ears after Intravenous Papain, and Prevention of Recovery by Cortisone

A substance has been demonstrated in solutions of crude papain, which, when injected intravenously into 1 kilo rabbits, in amounts less than 5 mg., results in complete collapse of both ears. The phenomenon becomes visible 4 hours after injection, and is complete within 24 hours. 3 or 4 days after papain, the ears gradually reassume their normal form. Ear collapse is associated with depletion of...

Increased Fixation of Sulfur35 by Cartilage in Vitro following Depletion of the Matrix by Intravenous Papain

The uptake in vitro of sulfur-35 by costal cartilage obtained from nine rabbits 11 days after an intravenous injection of crude papain solution was compared with that in costal cartilage from eight normal untreated rabbits. An increased fixation of the isotope was found in treated animals compared with controls. The depletion of cartilage matrix by papain provided an experimental situation to t...
